Quietly
The boy sneaks
Into his father's stud.
Opening the bottom drawer,
Of the armoire
In the corner,
He retrieves relief.
He tiptoes upstairs
To His room
Everything is neat and clean
Nothing out of place
The first time it's been that way
In months.
He lays down
And pretends to be asleep,
Hiding his secret
Beneath,
As his mother trudges in sleepily
To check on him.
She goes back out
And he turns himself over.
He thinks of school
That dreaded, hated place.
He thinks about home
He is lonely there, too.
His mother is asleep
His father downstairs,
Watching late television
With a beer in his hand.
The boy silently
Thanks both of them for loving him
And wanting the best for him
Father is half asleep
Dazedly staring at the screen,
When the shot
Assaults his ears.
He jumps, staring at the TV,
As if that is where the sound had come from.
But the newcaster keeps droning.
Realizing he assumed wrong,
He hurries upstairs.
His wife is weeping.
He wonders what's wrong
Their little boy, gone
Becuase of the boys
At school

Stumbling blindly,
The teenage boy
Makes his way to
The medicine cabinet,
A football helmet
In his hand.
He fills it to the brim
With colorful, slender pills.
Goodies at a party,
Confetti in a basket.
Who is his father
To force him to be
Someone he is not?
The boy staggers
Back to his room.
Frantically,
He unlocks his closet
And opens it wide.
The secret life of Anna.
The boy sifts through the selection of dresses
And skirts
Untill he finds what
He wants.
He puts on the long brunette wig,
Slips on the high-heeled shoes.
Using the makeup
Stolen from a sister,
He changes
From Justion to Anna.
Anna, his real life.
But Justin has to go.
Silently, Anna sits on her bed.
She takes one last look at herself
In the mirror.
Then, crying,
She destroys Justin
And herself, too.
Another life taken
By society's hateful standards.

Resiliantly,
The girl stands her ground
Trying to ignore
The names
yelled from her classmates.
Dyke, lezzie, lesbo.
But when she gets home,
She can no longer stand it
She pulls back the sleeve of her jacket
Her arms are covered in cuts
The cuts that the names
Carve into her heart.
But these names
Are the last straw
And she takes the knife.
Her mind racing,
And she slips.
But then she realizes
That this is good
She wont have to
Feel the cuts
From the words
Any longer.
From the boys
And girls.

A girl sits
At her breakfast table
Reading the newspaper.
She read the article,
Enraptured.
Three classmates at her school
Dead.
She talks to her mother,
Through sign language,
To come read.
She knew that boy,
Who sat alone at lunch
Untill she began to sit with him.
She knew that girl
The one with the short hair who
Was always getting beat up
But always fighting back.
She knew that boy,
The one who played football,
Untill one day he quit
And no one knew why
And the next day
He came to school
With makeup and a wig on
And his football friends
Made fun of him
And beat him up.
She knew them.
they were nice kids.
They talked to her,
Even though she could not talk back.
"Actions dont speak
Louder than words,"
She signs to her mother,
"Words kill just as much
And maybe more."
Words hurt more than actions.

Deep and real, cold as steel, and really really good and true.
Thank you for enlightening my day.
